UMPC as a Desktop Replacement

Because in Australia we’re always playing catch-up when it comes to the latest technologies (the whole Downunder thing) this time I decided to post a two part video regarding the EO i7210. The two parts are mutually exclusive and can be viewed in sequence, or individually.

Part One of the video is not so much a product review, but a Product Preview. Knowing that most Aussie’s will not touch these for a long time still, I felt that one of my duties as Australia’s Tablet Guy is to share the hand’s on experience – at least that’s what all the emailer’s keep telling me (cheers gang).

Part Two of the video focuses on something I like to term as the “Mobile Permanent Office.” Because the i7210 is the first UMPC (Microsoft Origami Project derivative) to run an Intel Processor with 2MB of L2 Cache [providing multitasking abilities] the possibilities of replacing a notebook or desktop are “somewhat” closer. Using i7210’s capacity to “Extend its Desktop” I demonstrate just how one might increase their own productivity in the office, or home.

Sounds like you almost said "This is Hugo Ortega of the UltraMobileGeek blog..." Hehehe..

This is a great video... you did it much better than I could have with your camera software and in-window narration. I wanted to do something like this but have no dock :( Now I can just link to your post.

I am going to post the OPPOSITE of your post tonight: Going UltraMobile! (tips on speed and convenience)

Hi ThoughtFix!

Cheers on the kind words mate. The ending was really funny as anything but UberTablet alsmost came out of my mouth...hahaha.

Still can't see a link back to this post (I think you like leaving links on my site more than linking!) lol

Patience, Hugo! It's 5:42 PM here and I am still at my "day job." I'll write the article in a few more hours.

HAHAHA. I assumed, from your responses, that you're a full-time blogger! Nice to hear you slog it our like the rest of us! LOL.

Where's "here" anyway?

That'd be Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Where it's too hot to do anything but geek and blog in the air conditioning. You're welcome here any time. :)

Hugo,

That second video is actually exactly how I have started using my Fujitsu P1510 at home, with a 20" Viewsonic widescreen LCD with the P1510 in front, and a wireless KB & mouse in front of that. It works a treat!

This setup gives me the benefit of the large screen when I don't need to be mobile, and keeps all my applications and data on the one device, so I don't have to worry about keeping stuff in sync between systems.

Cheers,
Kean

Hey Kean!

Great to hear from ya! If anyone would be using this setup it would be you mate. I think there is a lot of merit in it for two reasons:

small device are getting powerful enough to become "primary" devices (almost), and the synchronisation story is still so bad that by giving yourself this setup your also taking away the need to synchronise all together, i.e. it's already on your desktop!

Have a great P1510 weekend.

Hi, I got my i7210 a couple of weeks ago after having seen you videos... I LOVE IT! It is a great problem but recently it scared me to death... Just today I shut it down and put it in my bag like always, about two hours later I found it on and hotter than I have ever felt it before... I thought the battery was going to explode! Luckily I turned it off and let all the parts cool off. Once I turned it back on it seemed to be fine... This is a seriuos problem... Is there a defect with the i7210?

Thanks,
Eric Johnson

Hi Eric,

Sorry about the lack of response...I upgraded my tablet and only just remembered to setup the uberTablet email (lazy me).

The only issue the i7200 has is that the power button is a "press down" styled button, as opposed to a switch in most the other UMPC. All you need to remember when turning off your tablet is to lock off the power button by sliding the lock found next to the power button, to the left. This will show a red ensignia once switched and you will know it is locked. What has happened, I think, is that you have not done this.

Does that sound right???

Thanks for your support and please let me know your thoughts so I can escalate it if need be.
