How to: Upgrade Q1 Ultra to 2GB RAM

*UPDATE 26th April 2008* Please note that the RAM slot on the latest Q1U released, i.e. the Q1UP is located under the motherboard. The good news is that it is accessible but you need to be willing to pull the entire machine apart. The bad news is that most will not want to do this as you need a high level of technical knowledge to do this. So it is important to note that this video does not apply to the Q1UP. Even if you follow the instructions and pull the case off, you will not be able to get to the RAM easily. *

In favour of a more reliable tutorial than pictures alone I have decided to post a video on “how to” upgrade the RAM on your shiny new Samsung Q1 Ultra. For those of you that own a Q1 Ultra it will make sense for you to perform this upgrade as it will enhance the user experience significantly. For those of you that do not own a Q1 Ultra it may pay to learn a few tricks for next time you decide to perform this upgrade. And for those of you that have never performed an upgrade yourself…go for it! It’s fun!

Since getting the Q1 Ultra in Australia I noticed that the RAM upgrade to 2GB improved the following:

  • Faster boot time
  • Faster shut down time
  • Fast Application launch time
  • Faster data transfer times
  • Better multitasking abilities

Let me know if this videos helps and what improvements you find, after the upgrade, if any?

Thank you, Hugo! I have not gotten around to upgrading my Q1u yet, but your video allayed any apprehension I had about doing so!

Great video! Have you actually timed things like bootup before and after the upgrade?

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

Hi Dave (Socpsy),

I haven't done that mate so I am judging it based on observation only, and I tend to believe it is notably faster. (Sometimes I wish I were more scientific and less raw enthusiastic.) I'll see what I can do next show so thank you for the suggestion.

By the way, thank you for the great comment.

Thanks again, Hugo! I'm a science-type, so I like numbers. LOL! Thankfully, we need all types of folks. Your "raw enthusiasm" is much appreciated!!

HI SKP,

Have fun mate and make sure you a glass of whatever you drink at this time of the morning/evening/night! :-)

You guys rock!

Thanks Hugo! You were there with me on video with pauses every step of the way for my RAM upgrade. I did it! And the results seems Hugo Huge to me in terms of speed and performance!

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

hi Jim!

That is so cool! Doing a tutorial is one thing, but empowering someone enough to succesfully complete the task themself is another.. You make me one happy vlogger mate.

Well done! And keep me posted on your results - it was worth it wasn't it!?!?!

Yes-continues to be amazing on speed Improvement. I got a suggest from origami forum to charge virtual memory paging setting to around 3055 instead of what setting was around 2000. I posted a link on GBM forum too. This seemed to cause another big big boost in performance. Some have questioned why. What do you think!

I took your advice and ordered the Q1 Ultra vista version and while its a superb bit of kit i find it runs really slow. I am considering a few options, a memory upgrade to 2gb, downgrading the software to XP as i read that it runs fantastically with the Q1U or just returning the unit altogether what do you think

Chris

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

HI Chris,

Big question for me mate but I will do my best to answer.

I think the best opportunity lies in the learning here mate. If I were in your shoes I would go for the XP downgrade first (for the best learning experience) and then if you weren't happy you ould do a restore of the original OQ (from the DVD) and return the unit anyway.

I happen to like the Q1U a lot and feel that it is one of the machines destined to be great. If you push past your concerns and work on tweeking the machine to meet your needs you may well get a lot of enjoyment out of it still.

Keep me posted mate.

Thanks Hugo i have been using it alot and have found a bunch of tweaks for vista and its getting much better, i am ordering the ram upgrade and i am going to stick with vista
. The more i use it the more i love it

Thanks for the great video but what RAM does the unit take? I would like to buy a 2gb stick but no idea which one! :)

Just Did the 2GB RAM upgrade on my Q1 Ultra and it was a little difficult getting the case apart. Seemed like it had to be "pryed" up and over something on the side but persistence paid off and the udgrade is complete. I just checked my System and BAM the 2038 MB of RAM is there!!!!!!!

Thanks Hugo

Hugo, Thank you. I did the upgrade by following along with your video. You were right on the money. It made is sooooooooo easy.

Hey Hugo,
thanks for this great walk through... I'd been thinking about getting a Q1U but was worried by the 1GB RAM limit.
Now I just need to find a store locally (Redmond WA) that actually carries the darn device ;)
BTW do you know if the Vista version has a working fingerprint sensor as the specs on the Samsung mini site says the fingerprint sensor only works with the HSPDA equipped Visa model (!)
Great blog... wish Tablet and UMPCs had more credibility

wow! thanks for this hugo! i was just searching the net for reviews to make my mind and get me one of these, and one of the drawbacks was the amount of ram, but with this tutorial not only i will get myself an Q1U, but i will upgrade the memory as you did! thank you very much!! i now wondering how much ram will the Q1U will hold, maybe 3 g`s? BTW is there any chance that it might be possible to upgrade the hard disk?

thank you very much hugo! keep up the good work!

Thank you Hugo! I have watched your video before bought my Q1 Ultra and I knew I had to order mine with an additional 2GB RAM. Thanks to you, my upgrade took less than 5 mins. I must say my Q1 Ultra, which came with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, was speady enough with 1 GB so I did not really see a big difference after the upgrade but I am still glad I did it! Look forward to seeing other upgrades and tweaks...

Very helpful, thank you.

Could you please write donw the part number of the compatible memory that we should use.

i got to the stage where all the pressure points are free and the box should come apart but it doesnt. in the video, once your 3 pressure points have been fried, the box opens with ease, with me it's like something is clinging the box to components or something. how hard is one supposed to pull to prise this apart?

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

hi Anonymous,

Sorry I have taken so long but I am away on holiday.

All I can think of is that you still have the Pen in the holder. Remove the pen!

Let me know hw you go now. Thanks.

Where can you buy 2G memory card for the Q1 Ultra?

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

Hi Bob,

I think this is pretty easy. It really depends which country you are in. Look for some DDR2 SO-DIMM 2GB. It shouldn't be too hard. I know in Australia it is readily available.

Anonymous said...

What do most people do with the original 1 GB stick?

Anonymous said...

Amen my brother! Good to see a like minded micro-geek out there!

I'm thinking about the downgrade to xp option, but I'm not sure how to go about this. Any suggestions? (Too chicken to try the memory upgrade....yet.)

Anonymous said...

Lets say I change the memory and down the road there is a prob could I put old memory back in and send it in since its still under warranty? will they know it was opened? please let me know. I want to do this upgrade but do not want to ruin my warranty please please please let me know

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

Hi Anonymous,

Thanks for your query! With regards to cracking open the case the inorny is that if you do it or they do it, it still has to be done. This means that no one can really tell if the case has been opened (if it is done correctly as per my video).

The reality is that they will only know if you stuff up when putting it back together. The main thing in the case of the Q1U is the final pressure clip - it is found in between the USB ports. This clip should be locked back in its original place to avoid raising any alarm bells.

DISCLAIMER

I have been opening these devices for many years, and, I am not afraid to void my warranty. What I showed in the video can look easy but it may not be for some. Of the case or the internal components break during the process then your warranty will be void so I would only try this with care.

Good luck!

Anonymous said...

OK, I followed your instructions, and it worked like a charm. I ordered a DDR2 200 pin 2g card, and the case on the device opens just as advertised.

I also tried going with downgrading to XP, installed all of the device specific drivers available from the Samsung website, but have 1 problem. The ethernet controller doesn't seem to have a driver, so I can only access the internet via wifi. Anyone have a solution for this?

As far as speed gains, XP is much faster and more responsive, but the memory upgrade does have quite a dramatic effect with Vista. It's much faster opening programs, and it seems more stable. with less long pauses if more than one program is open.

Anonymous said...

Hey Hugo! After watching your video I'm now confident enough to walk down to my local Fry's and do the memory upgrade tomorrow! I am wondering though, how easy would it be to upgrade the 40gb drive to a 32gb SSD drive? Would it be the same process just remove the orginal drive and slap in a 32gb SSD drive? Or would I have to worry about proprietary connectors and such?

Thanks!

I am trying to replace the hard drive in my Q1 (not the ultra) and unfortunately the cable does not fit. My current unit wsa designed with the thicker tab where as my new hard drive needs a thinner tab. A couble of questions: 1) do you have a picture of the hard drive cable in the q1 ultra? 2) does it use the thinner tab? 3) does the ssd model of the original q1 use the thinner tab?

any help would be appreciated.

Anonymous said...

Great help, Hugo! I tried opening the case directly and could not figure it out until your video. I'm interested in upgrading to an SSD. Actually, having an SSD for a second OS. I may try the dram too.

As for the person who wanted an SSD upgrade to the older Q1, you might look at DVNation who I believe have a "naked" version of the Samsung 32GB SSD. I'm not yet sure if it has the right connector. Apparently 1.8" HDD up to 40GB can be thin, while 60GB and above are 7mm thick like the SSDs tend to be.

Anonymous said...

Postscript: I took m Q1U apart this mnin and now understand wy a few people think there is another screw somewhere. The case resisted opening and felt very much like it was still joined somewhere in the center. After a few minutes of looking through the edges, suddenly it yielded. I found no sign of what might have been the hindrance. So, to anyone out there with the same symptoms be patient and keep gently fiddling with the case until it gets free.

Anonymous said...

Not sure if anonymous is still interested (Hugo, why does your blog show time but not date?) but the disk drive in my Q1U is a Toshiba 6008GAH with a ZIF micro-ATA connector. That is he one which looks like a naked flat ribon cable that sticks into a thin slot.

Anonymous said...

Hey thanks for the tutorial. I am going to upgrade the RAM on my samsung Q1U but I was wondering which type of ram to upgrade with. I know the stock is DDR2 400, but I noticed on your stick, you had DDR2 667. Is this the type of RAM you would recommend?

hi hugo i recently purchased the umpc ultra npq1u and upgraded from 1gb to 2gb as per your instructions. well the touch screen has not worked since. tried everything to get back function but nothing has changed. am i missing something? thanks

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

Hi Paul,

I'm so sorry about the late reply. How did you go??? Is there a touchscreen now?

All I can think of is that you have knocked out one of the ribbon cables? Have you looked that all the ribbon cables located, especially the ones near the left side are connect properly?

Let me know how you go. PS. In device manager is the touchscreen there?

Unknown said...

hi hugo

no luck as yet. i can not find touchscreen in device manager. why the disappearance. more to the point, what can i do?

thanks paul

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

That sounds odd. Here is a simple question for you. Have you got the touchscreen lock on? It is located on the power switch? (I know that sounds obvious, sorry).

The fact that you cann see it in device manager sounds good. Can you uninstall the Touch Utility in Control Panel, and then reinstall it from the recovery DVD (from the drivers dick). Your install might have corrupted (not as a result of the RAM upgrade) and may need this.

Let me kno what happens after this.

PS. I have not been on the blog for some time but I do not want to let you do so I will check back more freuently on this thread.

C) and last but not least I have the review from a consumer report that discusses what things he did to optimize his UMPC experiacnce. Great review Scooobydooo 

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful:
It's almost perfect - after a few tweaks., December 26, 2007
By ScOObydoo (USA) - See all my reviews

Let me start by saying that out of the box this product would never receive 4 stars. This is why; Vista on 1Gb of ram just won't do.

Samsung have clearly listened to some complaints as my unit did not come with McAfee installed, in fact that amount of bloatware was very limited. Upon booting the device installs itself, then needs an hour to create a backup on its drive. Which is annoying because it places it on a hidden partition swallowing up 13Gb of storage (of your 60Gb).

The touch settings in Vista are pretty bad by default, so you really need to tweak those a lot to get them right (turn off the silly mouse "help" pointer, enable the keyboard instead of handwriting recognition etc...).

After that you need to do something mean to it; rip it open and swap out the 1Gb module for a 2Gb one. It's not for everyone but there are some very handy video tutorials online. All you need is a small screwdriver and steady hands. The 2Gb module (2Gb DDR2 notebook memory) cost me $49. With 2Gb you'll notice a MASSIVE increase in speed. Applications now run smoothly, open fast and there is little to no disk memory swapping. But like I said; it's not a question of an easy to open panel, you need to remove the entire backside of the machine to reach the ram. Why Samsung don't just deliver it with 2Gb is beyond me.

Once you have upgraded the ram and tweaked the OS you need to turn off the Vista indexing service (google it), this reduces the amount of drive accesses for indexing your files. All that does is help with file searches which you probably rarely do anyway.

Now with 2Gb, better tweaks and some services turned off you'll want to turn off the Vista Aero settings (once again; google it).

It's taken you 2 hours, but now you have a PERFECT speedy little UMPC that runs nice and fast.

Some general observations:

The mouse pointer is beyond useless. It has little to no acceleration, use the stylus and keep the mouse in joystick mode, it'll make scrolling much easier.

The "dialpad" popup keyboard is horrendous, ignore it and never touch it again.

The keyboard on the device itself is for emergencies only. Because that is about the only time you'll put yourself through the agony of typing something on it. The best and (in my opinion) fastest way to type is with the on screen keyboard, or the (optional) Samsung portable keyboard (or any small keyboard of your choice). The Samsung is listed for $89, but comes with a built in eraserhead mouse. Amazon has a folding Bluetooth keyboard for $29 which is a great option for this machine.

Audio is impressive, nice and loud.

Wifi is great, it connects much faster than my Dell XPS notebook and never drops a signal.

The device boots in under a minute and wakes from sleep in around 12 seconds (including connecting to wifi).

The screen is perfect; great resolution and extremely bright and sharp.

Heat is an issue. It DOES get warm, but never to the point where it will burn you or that it becomes too hot to handle.

The Microsoft Origami interface is awesome. Anyone that has seen Media Center will recognize the look and feel. It's a media center/application launcher optimized for touch screens.

Bluetooth is stable, they use the Widcomm Bluetooth stack (which put simply means they use a third party company for the Bluetooth software and not the limited Microsoft package).

The package is a little limited. You get the unit, a charger, a battery, a wrist strap (that also works as a handle, very clever) and a cheap (poor quality) case. In my opinion Samsung should have delivered it with the organizer case and a keyboard, but I fully understand they wanted to keep costs low on it.

All in all it's a winner. I picked it over the competition (Sony UX380 or the OQO model II) because of the screen and the fact that I can upgrade the Ram. The Sony is limited to 1Gb no matter what you do, and the OQO is underpowered with a VIA cpu. Even though this device is only 800MHz I felt that it ran faster than the OQO model II I tested. It also has the perfect screen size to resolution ratio. The Sony has a higher resolution screen, but is 2 inches smaller making it near impossible to work on for longer durations.

My only real annoyance with Samsung is the model numbering on the Q1 ultra series. First of all; calling it Q1 was plain stupid. The previous model was also called Q1, and it's nothing like this machine, so google searches for "q1 ultra" return 100's of hits on "q1 ultra portable" which is usually NOT this device. Note to Samsung; next time, call it Q2.

Then the various models of the Q1 Ultra; they make one with no Bluetooth or cameras, one with Vista, 2 cameras and Bluetooth but no fingerprint scanner, one with XP, 2 cameras, Bluetooth and a fingerprint scanner and several others. All with cryptic names. Bad move. It's near impossible to determine what the exact specifications are of this machine.

All in all I can highly recommend the Samsung Q1 Ultra for people shopping for an ultra portable PC. If you use Skype, Office, Internet Explorer/Firefox, Mail and most other basic applications you will be very happy (once again; only on 2Gb). It won't do well on heavy applications like video editing or graphic designs.

Hope this information is helpful to folks viewing your blog

If all goes well I should have my umpc by this weekend, and very soon I will be part of the marching worlwide UMPC society :-)and then ,let the games begin

v/r

Hey Hugo,

First of all, great blog! Really useful and enjoyable. Your posts & video helped me a lot with regard to which UMPC I should choose. So, now I am waiting for Q1 Ultra (Q1-UV) from Amazon (only $749! Great deal).

I have also ordered 2GB RAM stick to upgrade the UMPC (your video is really helpful in this respect).

However, I am still kind of uncomfortable about Vista... From my experience, Home Premium is not very stable (compared to Ultimate) and definitely slower than XP (I have Tecra M7 Tablet PC and played around with different OS quite a bit).

My question, actually, is (and sorry for such a long introduction) which version of XP do I need if I want to upgrade my UMPC from Vista? My concern is that XP Tablet PC version is not available for sale, will XP professional work?

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

Hey Maxim,

Great to hear from you! It seems the more comments I get the more I want to get back into blogging! (well done)

I am pleased I have assisted and look forward to doing more and more. With regards to your query make sure you take a close look at XP Tablet PC. If you only install XP Professional the UMPC will work but you will have non of the Tablet PC features like pen, or INK features.

If you cannot get it let me know and Tegatech Australia can send you a copy. :-)

Hello Hugo!
Thanks to your great video, I yesterday tried the memory update myself. It worked great. For XP, I cannot see any differences in startup- or shutdown times, but launching any program is definitely a great deal faster now.
I have a few remarks on the disassembling, though:
I own a Q1U HSDPA, european (german) version. My unit has two addtional screws in the battery compartment, near the middle of the unit. These also have to be unfastened, making it to a number of seven screws in total. Also you have to remove the SIM-card in the battery compartment, otherwise you will not be able to take the two parts apart. When taking the two sides apart, I faced minor problems with the audio/ headset connector. Not a big deal, but one has to be aware of it.
Thanks again for your video which helped a lot!

I have a few questions:

1. The video you showed was completed on a Q1 Ultra correct? My model # is NP-Q1U. Is this the same as yours?

2. Was the memory you put in DDR? Do you know if it is limited to 2GB?

3. What is the "flat headed" tool that you used? Can I just use a flat headed screwdriver?

Thanks for your patience and help. I have been searching for possible solutions. I love the computer and do not want to give it up, so hopefully this will work!

I've also upgraded mine to 2gb. Was running Vista now Win 7 and it works well. I adjusted system performance for best performance except turned on desktop comp, transparent glass, shadows, thumbnails, and translucent delection rectangle.

My biggest question is the cpu is what spikes and looking spec's it seems like it used the Intel 915GM board.

http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/boards/index.htm?iid=mbd_body+mb_all

Seems like the best the best cpu is the 780 a 2.26 ghz proc. New egg has it discontinued but I may dig some more to find it elsewhere and see if it works. I will let you all know if it works.

I recently upgraded my hard drive to an SSD from Mtron (MSD-PATA3018-ZIF2). I purchased the 32GB unit from RocketDisk for about $230 US. Backed up my system using Norton Ghost, removed the 1.8 inch hard drive, slipped the ZIF connector (carefully) in the Mtron SSD and restored the drive contents.
Wow much faster! While you have the case off for memory upgrade, put in an SSD!

Wow Bravo Sir! I must hand it to you, you sure do know what you are talking about. I mean, surely the knowledge I gained is immense, but to know that we have individuals out there like yourself who take time to educate people like myself all around the world. It simply makes me smile to know that there ARE people out there who are just as or even more educated than myself. You've come a long way to speak of what you say and that my friend is true diligence. I will Surely keep up to date with anything else you post, you've proven yourself to me as a reader

And if we are talking specifics, here, then make it a waist 33, length 30 to crease nicely over my square tipped Kenneth Cole Reaction vintage nubuck loafers. I also would like a 1.8" wide Gucci horsebit ring buckle belt the same color as the loafers.

Hugo, I have the Q1U-SSD with the solid state drive. It has been getting warm lately and I don't hear a fan running like I do in my Q1U with a standard hard drive. Does it have a fan and how do I replace it if it is broken?

Good Job Hugo! I successfully upgraded my Q1U (The 800mhz 1GB Vista Home Premium NP-Q1UA000/SEA model) with 2GB SODIMM, a 128GB SSD and Windows 7 Ultimate.

The memory was from TigerDirect.com and here is the part info: Crucial 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz SODIMM (C19-6016 )

The SSD was from MemoryC.com and here is the part info: 128GB KingSpec 1.8" ZIF 40-pin SSD Solid State Disk (MLC)
Item Number: 11469
Mfr. PN: KSD-ZF18.1-128MJ

I also purchased a 1.8" external USB ZIF drive enclosure to be able to image the old drive to the new one and still be able to use the old drive as an external USB drive. That also came from MemoryC.com: KingSpec Mobile Disk ZIF 1.8" SSD Enclosure w/ USB cable
Item Number: 11690
Mfr. PN: KMB-ZF.1

The upgrade went perfectly and everything is working as advertised. This is the first time I've worked with ZIF cabling, so that took a while to figure out (Note: blue side of the cable up and inserted into the controller, white side up and inserted into the drive), but in the end, it worked fine.

My performance index went from:

Processor: 1.8
Memory: 4.2
Graphics: 2.3
Gaming: 3.0
Hard drive: 3.4

To:

Processor: 1.8
Memory: 4.2
Graphics: 2.3
Gaming: 3.0
Hard drive: 5.9

Thanks for the video, it really helped.

Thanks William for the great comment and thoughts. It has been a hugely downloaded tutorial and for good reason, i.e. nothing like some performance boosts on devices, right!

Enjoy!

Hi Rupert!

Thanks for your email! It sounds like your HDD is damaged to me. Did you drop the machine? is this problem a new problem or did you change the RAM and the unit started malfunctioning straight away?

Thanks!
