OQO it is!

I could not resist. After much consideration over 72 hours I have decided to head back to the OQO. I could not resist its sexy looks, its pocketable design, its Active Digitizer screen, its effortless keyboard, and more. With so many devices to choose from I still could not find a way to replace my OQO...and believe me I tried!

I looked high and low for a device that suits all my needs and narrowed it down to the Shift (still not out) and the OQO. I can honestly say however that the OQO is still as appealing to me as the day I first received it and for that reason I am back! In fact I am so back that I have ordered the 1.6GHz e2 with 32GB SSD! When it arrives you can definitely expect more camera action from me.

In the mean time the trusty Toshiba R400 is packed up with its dock, its extended battery and accessories, and sits idly under my desk playing second fiddle to a device a tenth of its size.

Too funny.

Good choice!

As for the SSD, after seeing the performance differences on that comparison video - I guess no one will ever want any UMPC without it. :)

But don't forget to post your own review and comparisons to the "old" model. We sure will love to hear about it.

Hugo! I'm glad to see you taking some quality time, life is too short! I'm still using my OQO 02 since April 2007 as my #1 PC.

Finally did a trip from Washington state down to Arizona by road, then fly back from Phoenix, and for the first time I did not have to lug a heavy laptop case to stay connected & have full PC function. It was the total mobility I could only dream of before getting my 02.

The other day, even my wife said she was impressed with how clear the text was when I brought up a few web pages for her on a subject we were talking about, all wireless in the rec room not missing a beat on the tv without hovering over the old land anchor down the hall in one of our spare bedrooms.

There has been a lot of rhetoric on the future of UMPC's and Origami size tablets. What people forget is some of us want a fully portable mobile wireless PC not only capable of internet/email, but doing all the PC stuff we do on a desktop or laptop. I see the use of a laptop too awkward when in mobile mode or even in meetings taking notes. The 02 is perfect for me in any situation and I can always dock up for more intense heads down computing if needed, besides the fact it is one of the few that can be easily kept close by when you need it.

Anyway, sorry to go on, but real glad to see you back. From the great NorthWest to the Outback, "yohhhh!".

Hey Hugo,

So why the OQO over the Q1U(e.g. split keyboard?)? And what about the Shift is making it come up short(e.g. battery life? or maybe mouse)?

Thanks Foo

Hey Hugo,

Which OS did you go for on your new OQO, XP or Vista?

Anonymous said...

Hmm... Perhaps you might want to wait until after December 3rd? If OQO is actually going to announce an HSDPA option, you might want that...

James M Croteau (Jim) said...

I have the ssd, evdo, best version of OQO---I had a q1u and found that I was not using it differently enough from my 12 inch tablet (Fuji T2010). With the OQO the usage pattern is really different. Vista has "settled in" well--definitely the best vista out of box on umpc experience I have had or heard about. Better still with a few tweaks and giving vista that time to settle. My only issue is lag when using the tablet input panel for conversion to text. I really am up on the OQO!

@Carlos Martins:

Hi Carlos,

I wil be sure to post more videos this year and in 2008. With regards to the SSD it is probably the single most improvement I am most waiting for. I am looking forward to seeing the difference and witnessing first hand the benefits of such a machine. If all the reports are truethen the SSD will be something we can all expect as standard in the near future!
Thanks man.

@opus:

Life is too short man and with regards to holidays I have learnt that they are best TAKEN, as they’re rarely GIVEN! 
The OWO sounds like it was a real hit on your road trip. It is the ultimate mobility mate and for this reason I too went back. When you finally do not need to lug around a laptop with you then you start to witness just how real OQO is!
It sounds like your wife is finding ways to enjoy the device too…and this is a big plus for your future. My wife has also been swayed and it seems that when women do this it is for reasons other than emotive ones. Women tend to have more logic around these things and therefore by joining the club as such somehow they are affirming that “we might just be right”, i.e. maybe the OQO really is special!
Like you I find it a true mobile device. Like you I also decided that mobility has to also entail function. With the full Operating System and at my fingertips (and in the palm of my hands) I have found that I am more productive and ultimately more professional too. There is little I cannot do now because of this machine and this is a good thing!
Thanks for your great comment. Feel free to ramble on any day!

@Dave (socspy)

Hi Dave…it’ll come!

@foo:

I will post a HTC summary soon but there are good reasons for my swaying away from such a machine. I look forward to sharing some of that but at present the battery life, the cut down version of WM6, the lack of communication between WM6 and Vista make the Shift a “almost there” machine for me.

@hotrats:

Hi Hotrats,

I went for Windows Vista Ultimate with Ultimate Office 2007. This is a combination I will never steer away from now on any machine! It is just too useful.

@JC:

Hi JC,
Ummmm…..yes……(That’s all I can say about that at present.)

@JimCroteau:

Hi Jim,

I hear you mate. I completely agree that Vista has settled in and OQO is the best “out of the box” Vista experience there is (UMPC or other)! I am glad you are finding it so complimentary in your life and would love to hear more about your “usage pattern.”
For me, for example, I travel a lot and appreciate the true mobility I get by using such a device. The OQO is remarkably functional on the road and the battery life to processing power ration is better than any other notebook on the market. Given the choice again I think I would still go OQO!

Can’t wait for my SSD!

have you tired the sony ux series yet?
i have always read comparison about oqo 02 and sony ux 490 (us model) and i'm really torn as to which one to get for myself.

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

Hi Anonymous,

I have tried the SOny and do not like it as much (when compared to the OQO) for two reasons. 1. Its keyboard has keys which are hard to define; the OQO has great definition. 2. The Active Digitizer on the OQO is awesome and gives a great hand writing experience (which is why a Tablet was developed in the first place!)

I also put my money on the OQO vs. the Sony.

Hello Hugo!

Greetings from Spain. Lemme me introduce to my self I´m a doctor and I am directing a project to create/adapting umpc/tables in the hospital and health services of one zone in Barcelona. I am a regular on your blog and your videos, in fact I used some of them for my presentations, hope that this not disturb to you.

The fact is that recently I went to Medical convention in Dusseldorf to find the latest technologies in umpc intended for world health.

And what I found was the technology of motion computing from intel health and little else you can check it at http://www.motioncomputing.com/solutions/healthcare.asp .

For me that I am my normal reader of your blogg found this table long overdue. The only advantage is that it can very easily cleaned blood and urine. ;)

I think that this one is very heavy and crude, it is very difficult to manage, and that the camera, which for me is very important, it has very bad resolution.

Do you know if there are any developments in health?

Thank you for your help! and continue on your work you´re the best!!!!!

what´s your email?

Dra.Velasco.

Hugo Gaston Ortega said...

Hola Senor Doctor!

thank you for your kind email and thoughts. the computer you are talking about, from Motion, is the C5. while it ticks a lot boxes it is also clumsy to deal with. While I know of a few things coming I can't actually tell you...sorry NDA. I can tell you however that in the wipe me down (urine on me) PC space, the C5 will be good for some time.

keep coming back here and keep using me for your presentations, no problem.

to email me go to (hugo at tegatech dot com dot au)

Interesting comment about the handwriting experience between the OQO and the UX as I've found the opposite to be true.

Between my 02 and UX390 the UX is considerably more accurate, especially around the screen edges. As well, the 02 suffers from occasional vectoring issues as well as lag from the lack of cpu power. Then finally, with the higher resolution of the UX I can fit about twice as much text onto the screen.

Last night in the Qantas Club (business lounge at an Australian Airport :)) I spent a couple of hours working and while taking regular trips to the snack bar I spied on the tech people were using, as I always do.
I saw lots of standard (read as boring) laptops, all PC's, a big mix, Dell's Compaq's, HP, Sony. Only two Mac's in the whole place and no Tablets!
Later in the evening a Japanese man walked past carrying a Panasonic T series (light, tough Japanese subnotebook) - awesome. He was carrying it on, in one hand and reading the screen, try doing that with a 2.5kg clunker. My wife has a Panasonic R3 and it's a great fast 900gram machine so I appreciated seeing a Pana in the wild as they're not available in Australia.
An hour later another Japanese man walked past with an older Subbie, a Vaio 505 and one guy had a Libretto U100, which he was using on the table with a mini USB mouse. But alas I had the only tablet in the place (P1610). After sending and email as a laptop I converted and surfed the web in table mode and that's when the looks started. The libretto gets a of "how cute, can you really work on that thing?". But the tablet actually gets looks, comments and questions because people are intrigued by the way you're working. Hope I run into Hugo one day in the airport so I'm not the only tablet freak in the place. :)
