OQO with HSDPA and SSD in Australia

I’ve been blessed more often than I care to remember with great devices, by great manufacturers. I’ve had several “first of” in the World but I am afraid none of them (maybe the HTC Shift comes close) were as exciting as this. Obviously I am ont first in the world but first in Australia/New Zealand is good enough for me given that’s where I spend my time.

Given that I have decided NOT to use a HTC Shift as my primary device then this delivery by the FedEX man is e2xcellent! LOL. The OQO e2 has been my favorite UMPC for some time but now with the addition of a 32GB Solid State Disk (SSD) and HSDPA (3G) I am a total convert.

Today, arriving ahead of schedule I might add, I received my OQO e2 and yes it is the SSD model, yes it has HSDPA, and as I like it…it is the Vista Business!!! So stay tuned while I get to know her this weekend and feedback on my thoughts. For now I can tell you that the 1.6GHz (improvement over the 1.5 GHz) VIA processor, and SSD combo, is noticeably faster than my previous 02.

I’m in geek eutopia!

HSDPA SSD OQO doing its thing

...with Mr. 02 watching nervously!

NB. I know many of you will ask so here is why I did not go for the Shift:

  • Battery life in Vista POOR
  • There is no way to communicate between Windows Mobile 6 and Vista, i.e. when my emails come in, and get replied to, on WM6 the process does not get duplicated on Windows Vista. POOR.
  • The device is portable but I am starting to believe that these bigger devices struggle to be considered mobile…(thoughts???)

There’s more but I will leave it for another post.

Hi Hugo,

now I know exactly what is on top of your X-mas list of presents: A Toshiba 128 GB SSD !

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2007/12/toshiba_introduces_3_new_ssd_f.html

I can feel the excitement about your newest version of the OQO - have fun.

Your expertise makes me feel, that I should own an OQO, as soon as there is a SirfStarIII GPS and 128 GB SSD installed at a reasonable price tag.

Kindest regards
Big Max from Germany

Indeed a VERY nice Christmas "gift"! :)

The SSD does make it a whole new experience - a few seconds do feel like a lot when you're "waiting" for a window to pop up.

However, unlike Big Max postes before, I don't think "huge" SSD are really needed for UMPC. I wouldn't mind having just a 16GB SSD on a UMPC - provided I had mobile internet access: that's the most important thing.

(Integrated GPS would be nice though :)

As I see it, the trend is to have remote storage somewhere on the internet (Google Drive?) or in your "server" at home, and access it wirelessly. That's why I think connectivity is a lot more important than local storage.
HSPDA is a step in the right direction - now we just need affordable mobile internet rates. :)

I tend to agree with Carlos. I have the "old" OQO 02 with a 60GB hard drive (formats to 55.8GB) and I have 40GB free. That's with all of my business applications (full Office Pro 2007 suite, OneNote, Visio, Project, a slew of network monitoring and remote admin apps) and lots of space wasted on music and Starcraft (.iso loaded in Daemon Tools).

I just don't seem to use a lot of storage on this device for whatever reason and feel that a 32GB SSD would be more than enough for me.

I'm very anxious to see your review of the HSDPA functionality in the OQO. We just got 3g access through AT&T (Cingular) in my area and I"m using a Bluetooth tether through my 8525 at the moment. I seem to recall from a review you did in the past that the integrated HSDPA in another device was much faster than the tethered option.

Congrats!

That has to be a super fast OQO !

Still trying to get in touch with you regarding a couple things in your 40 min OQO video for/at GBM but can't find an email address for you.

The Big O! Hugo! following on from my post in the last blog...i'm soooooooooooooo jealous of you right now! Ive been chaining my self to my desk ... or more to the point chaining my credit card to my wallet until MacWorld this January to see what apple has in store for the world in terms of the highly rumored apple tablet or touch based notebook computer - but now that I've seen you with one of those awesome little devices in ur hand WITH HSDPA - the 4 letters I have tatooed on my forehead - your every wish is my command! hehe...let us know how it is with a great UT vlog! I do have a question though - what brand/model HSDPA card have they jammed into the machine? Sierra Wireless im guessing as there really arent that many others - but most importantly what model? The reason I ask is i hear that its only HSDPA 2100, and for us people who have to travel into no-mans land need 850 for NextG, so If its just a standard miniPCIe sierra card, I'll be jacking it open and replacing it with another one of their quadband cards.

Still jealous....Dave

Hi Big Max,

Thank you for the comment. Like you I am passionate baout the SSD and think big is GOOD...but not necessarily best. I think the trend is for web based apps so there is not much reason for bigger...for me.

Trust me, the OQO is the best. :-)

Hi Carlos,

I think you read my mind. The SSD need only be enough for apps, the OS, and some stuff. And as far as GPS goes I like the idea of a dedicated GPS. It scares me to know that when I am being told where to go, I am losing access to my data, internet, device, etc. etc. I like the two being seperate.

Hi Folks,

my wish for a 128 GB SSD or even more is due to the fact, that I like the idea of giving up all other PCs except a mobile one.

I'd love to have ALL of my applications and data with me, because I'm a real mobile person for 6 months every year.

I'm a leisure skipper and run 5 maritime navigation applications at the same time plus my mp3 archive ( still on an external 80 GB HDD ) representing 1000 audio CDs and being online all the time when I stay in a harbour to communicate with my mates across the 7 seas.

I run all this on a 100 GB HDD laptop at present and I'd like to take it with me, when I leave my boat for a couple of hours or more (I don't do that with my laptop).

That's the reason why I think BIG in GB, while I'd like to go MICRO in terms of hardware.

I love the idea of a "one fits all needs" mobile engine.

Best whishes for X-mas and 2008
Big Max, Germany
PS
I hope you can read what I meant no matter what I wrote
( English is not my native language )

Carlos Martins said...

Hugo, you do have point there regarding the dedicated GPS unit.
But as I see it, location aware will become more common in the future - in inimaginable ways - and as such, I think eventually all devices will "need" a GPS in there - even if you don't use it for navigation.
(or, as needed, much better interfaces came along that will revolutionize the way with interact with our data, navigation, etc. :)
With HSPDA, even without GPS, I think we can get an aprox. location based on the cell towers.

Hey Hugo!

Very nice toys you have!! So if you are getting this goodness now, what are you expecting for Christmas!! :-O

Did you ever get a chance to see what model hard drive was in the Shift before you benched it? If you aren't going to use it, would you like my address to send it to? ;)

You can go with the 64gb version of the SSD in that model if you wanted.

http://www.supertalent.com/products/ssd.php

Model FSD64GC18M.

Also, if you are running Vista, are you running Aero? There are 2gb modules for you. Lifetime warranties as well. These will let you run Vista more easily, even with Aero.

I am still hesitant about the keyboard of the OQO and its weight while holding it and typing. Thank you for your blog, though. Listing all of these options in one place is quite nice when doing research.

Hugo,

Can you do me another favor? What is the model number of the RAM and hard drive that is the in OQO? The RAM might be impossible to find, but the hard drive should be as simple as the Device Manager.

Thanks again!

Hugo, since you have used both the SSD and standard HD models, I'm wondering what your real world experience is. 32GB is small, but the performance might make up for it. I use a lenovo x61 now, and it starts up from hibernation painfully slow.
I travel internationally a lot, and roaming data charges can kill. I'd really like more space, but I'd really like that SSD performance, but space, speed... argh! Anyway, can you std any light on real world experience with both? Thanks!

Carlos Martins said...

Space and speed?

SSD in RAID 0! :)))

Anonymous said...

To h*** with the performance, what about the noise???? Does SSD quiet things down, fanwise? Will this be enough to sway people to OQO who are concerned about drawing attention in meetings?

Carlos Martins said...

It's as noisy as any flash USB stick you may have. :)

It's solid state, it doesn't make any noise at all.
As for temperatures, it will certainly be a lot cooler than any rotating hard disk, so... it should help keep OQO's temperature down as well.

But Hugo can tell it for certain.

Hugo,
Concerning your OQOx, I think you must suggest some changes to them-
now especially as your their au distributor.
Here is the bottom line; the OQO needs the keyboard from the Psion 5. You must purchase one of these on ebay and tell me/everyone that it is not the best small keyboard you have ever used. Now if you say wait I like to type standing up on the current set-up that fine, all OQO has to do is give their screen a hinge- so when flat it gets the current keyboard and when bent- for table use the Psion keyboard pops out. Note the Psion keyboard is only 1 inch wider than the OqO, something can be countered by making the OQO a good bit thinner- partly by using a solid state drive. So a thinner lighter OQO that is less than one inch wider, lighter and thinner; WITH a dual keyboard, would be the ultimate compromise machine. Tell me this cannot work?

Hugo, it has been a pleasure experiencing your contagious enthusiasm for mobile tablet pc's.

Hard to believe the explosion of UMPC's since March 2006, and with all the excitement of the OQO 02 in 2007.

For me it is not the excitement of the new technology, it's the potential impact it will have on my lifestyle, being totaly mobile with my OQO 02 now that I finally activated my Sprint wireless broadband.

Hope you, your family, and all your friends have a very happy new year, and here's to 2008, a year of big change with what we have now and what is coming out next.

Hugo,
I am currently looking at getting a new UMPC or Ultraportable laptop and have been leaning on the UMPC side recently as I already have a 13.3" Sony Vaio SZ670N/C. My current laptop is the smallest I have ever owned and I'm happy with the size. I just don't like lugging it everywhere, as it's a bit too large for everyday use but for my college classes it's fine.

My question(s) are is the battery life of the HTC shift really that bad in Vista and is it a hassle to keep with you during the day? I don't really need a pocketable device but I dont want something that is a pain to carry.

The second part of my question(S) is would you recommend the OQO Model 02 with the new SSD over the Shift? I do like the larger size of the Shift and I might take some notes in class with it. I'm a bit worried the smaller 5" screen on the OQO might not be big enough for that.

Thanks,
~Clay
