My Q1U gets HSDPA

Excitedly I have just got my Q1U-V back from an engineer friend…the welding, bending, mending type of angineer, and I am happy to report that it is HSDPA enabled now!

Now for some of you this may sound like a bit of a “what tha!” but for me it is very exciting as the Samsung Q1U has never been available in Australia with the HSDPA chip. Why you might ask? Well the reason is that we have our own very very stringent set of Telecommunications Standards Downunder called the A-Tick. Not only does this A-Tick Standard have to be passed, but it seems as though without the might of one of the “big boys” behind you (Telcos) you won’t even get the A-Tick any way. The only workaround therefore is to retro fit a locally an A-Ticked modem to the Samsung after it lands in the Country…and that’s just what we did.

The modem is the Sierra mini PCI Express HSDPA modem. It works perfectly and I must admit it makes the Q1U a entirely different experience (in a good way).

Hi Hugo,

welcome back to the show.

I can feel with you about HSDPA - I used my GPRS card + SIM card while I'm on my sailboat for summer months apart from Wi-Fi. This season I'll sign a contract with Vodafon for HSDPA, using an USB Stick or chose a PCMCIA Card that is offered, too. I prefer the USB stick this time because it'll operate with my future E³PC as well.

By the way, I followed day & night all news from recent CES - now I'm a little bit exhausted and need some deep sleep for a couple of nights.

Have fun with your modded Q1.

Kindest regards
Big Max

Well done Big Max with the CES coverage...that's dedication!

With regards to the modification it sure is funny just how much freedom you get from going "always on" Internet?! For me it is a total deal breaker from now on for other devices that do not have this ability.

Hello Hugo,
Hope u don't mind acting as moderater. Big Max I'm also a yachtie. Suggested to folk at Australian Palm User Group auspug.org that they have a competition to find the world's 'most adventurous Palm' & posted 'teaser' 1st para my entry. Hugo promotes the productivity aspects of the UMPC format and my efforts relate to only general aspects of the Palm so hopefully no conflict. Here's my full entry.
Recently I was present at a rescue offshore and which involved the Water Police. As I stood by in my own yacht in the churning seas I was surprised to hear my mobile ring. It was the cops wanting to know if I had the No. of the nearest marina so they could effect salvage. Instinctively grabbing my Palm from its handy container I did a search. Sure enough in my nautical meanderings I'd acquired it and was able to facilitate their contact.
The point I'm making is that although wind, surging swells and a sharp cross-sea were not 'extreme' by yachtie standards they are beyond what most people are likely to experience. Yet the Palm was not only there, it was in the thick of it. Leave the helm in unpredictable conditions to fire up a laptop -forget it!
My Palm has been part of my wanderings through the Whitsundays. It helped me to identify the reef upon which Cook almost founded, which as any student of history knows, would've rewitten all our (Aussie) lives. Brittanica on its sd card has aided identifying some of the exotic fish and coral species that fill a face mask.
Rocked in the berth by a gentle swell e-books has acquainted me with great works of literature. Or maybe it's been a case of just plug in the earphones, lie back and let the music of the masters saturate my soul.
It's the nature of sailing that sometimes you must spend the night adjacent the menacing 'teeth' of a rock or coral reef. Prudence demands that you mount an all night anchor watch. The Palm can play its part in relieving those tedious hours. 'Planetarium' for instance is a useful utility for spotting the constellation and star patterns over your head. Momentarily you're one with the Polynesian navigators on their legendary 'star voyages'. Should benign conditions permit catnaps then the alarm's regular beep will ensure you're not dozing your way to destruction.
Some Palms seem only happy in the hard nosed thrust of a business deal. Mine appears to have an insatiable thirst for the adventure of life.

Hi Hugo

I've just been searching for an upgrade (HSDPA modem)for my Q1 ultra . To see you have done this upgrade , I was wondering if I could do this to my Q1 as well . It frustrate's me to buy things that have slots and whatever else to do the job but , because we are so far behind in tech in Australia its unavailable . The whole next g B.S. little usb junk dosen't excite me . I'd rather have it built in and put a mobile sim in of choice . This is my second Q1 I have purchased from you and they both are great umpc's . The processor is a little slower than the old model . But for the tasks I do it gets by . I did have a usb pinnacle annalog and digital tv connetion on the first Q1 but the new Q1 ultra can't quite handle it . Which is another part missing from the Q1's . Maybe I should move to Korea so I can use one of these baby's to its full potential. Any new models of the Q1 coming soon ? ........Also Hugo not many people know of the umpc's . I supprised my boss when the Q1 turned up at my work site . He didn't know what the hell it was ha ha :) He still lives in the days of morse code . I continue to tell people to go to tegatech.com.au to buy them . Hope to hear of some new products soon . Cheers Jeremy
