32GB SSD HDD for my Slate

Scary pyjama pants I know!

Being a geek is not a choice, it’s a way of life. As I contemplate not geeking out I often find myself philosophising about my next geekish quest. Inadvertently what I create is a conundrum of “do I?” or “don’t I”?” If ask my wife she would probably have a very certain point of view. If I ask your partner we would probably get the same. The fact remains however that once you’ve been bit, you’ve been bit!

What’s my latest infection? SSD!

While I sit here waiting for my SSD HSDPA OQO I have managed to obtain a 2.5” SATA 32GB SSD Hard Drive made by Transcend. The part number is: TS32GBSSD25S. The fact that the SSD HDD is SATA, and the fact that it is 2.5” (and not the UMPC friendly 1.8”) means that I have decided to trial it in my TabletKiosk i440D Slate PC. As shown here.

I’ll keep you posted on my thoughts. As we speak I have removed the spinning HDD the Sahara came with and holding the two in hand feels remarkably different. One of them, with all its shinny bits and pieces feels solid and valuable, the other, with its plastic and veneers feels lifeless and cheap. (Truth be told the later should be far more impressive than anything I have ever explored.)

Can't wait to hear about how the SSD performs.

Be sure to use those common "enhancements" to make Windows a little more SSD-friendly.

oops, forgot something:

Have you ever reviewed (or have any opinion) on the Fujitsu P1610?

How does it compare to the U810/U1010, Stormtrooper?

You'll find a performance test on the Samsung site comparing a 60GB HDD vs. a 64 GB SSD

Look at this link for the P1610 and me. When it comes to comparing with the U1010 it is no comparison I am afraid. Both ink very similarly and both have similar features, but the main difference is size. Although size sounds like a small deal to me it is a big one when you look at these two devices. One is mobile and one is portable.

(If you ask me I would take the P1610 over the U1010 as the U1010 lacks too much punch...for me.)

Great link BigMax!

Carlos Martins said...

thanks for the link Hugo.

humm, really though it would be smaller
(it's hard to gauge its size just by its photos without any other comparison.)

I was hoping it would be kind of EeePC-ish size - that would be really perfect. :)

I wouldn't mind having the Stormtrooper - but that keyboard layout sure annoys me (no direct cursor keys!?!)

Oh well, guess the "perfect" UMPC is still out there, waiting for someone to build it.

Anytime Carlos,

Like you I am still looking for the ultimate UMPC. I still think the OQO is the closest it comes.

I just thought about the P1610 because a friend of mine saw a U810 for 275 Euros in taiwan, and considering it costs around 1000 Eur. in Europe - I was wondering if I should consider the P1610 as well.

If I really can get the U810 at that price, guess I won't mind living with the weird keyboard layout.

The OQO is indeed a fine piece of technology, but unfortunately it's out of my budget range. :)

One thing is certain though: whatever device I end up buying, I will surely get an SSD for it.
That OQO SSD vs HD video was very effective. :)

hi Hugo, great to hear that ur getting the HSDPA OQO...as you well know I've been interested in one for a while now but been holding back due to the lack of HSDPA - ive been out of the mobile loop for a while now due to uni, work and well...life - so when i heard about the HSDPA being available in the OQO i just about dropped dead!!! so, expect a call from me after the christmas break!

More on the topic - SSD - I have been considering giving one a shot - just not sure how/where to get my hands on one. Any hints/tips? Either that or I've lost my skill in finding things these days :s...

hi Carlos,

Your logic is great. I too believe there is no one BEST umpc so for me price plays a role. While a U1010 is not the BEST umpc I think that at the price you're talking about it would be one of the BEST buys, right!?

If anything the OQO is a luxury item at that price. It is still not an "everybody" device. I look forward to hearing what you did but if I were you the U1010 will be much better that the P16160 if it is at that price!

Hi Dave,

When I heard about the HSDPA on the OQO I fell off my chair too! I have locked it in as my next personal machine and can't wait!

With regards to buying a SSD it is almost impossile in Australia. It is really a case of which size and shape you want it, i.e. 32GB or 64GB, 1.8" (impossible) or 2.5".

Well, if it sounds too good to be true...
My friend checked around some more stores, and they all carry a "regular " price for the U1010 - and so he told me he wasn't too comfortable dealing with the only store carrying an item at nearly 30% of the retail price.

Back to "searching" mode.

I'll keep looking at the new HSPDA OQO, trying to convince myself I can pay for it (plus the SSD drive) :)

I believe that 2008 will be a great year for UMPC. With Intel "forcing" manufacturers to drop MID prices to more affordable ranges, I hope the rest of the industry follows their lead.

But more than the hardware alone, I think its about time software makes a "jump" as well.

I have been doing "touchy" features like those now seen on iPhone since I first got a win CE kit with touchscreen (over 6 years ago.)

There's a lot of market for touch applications for small portable devices - and I hope people start doing something about it.

When are you goingto post that unboxing video on the WiBrain? Also, when are you going to review the OQO e2? They both look like interesting devices, I would just like to know more.
